Editorial policy
Everything published here is written to be checkable. This page sets out the standards we hold ourselves to.
Primary sources first
Rates, thresholds and rules come from HMRC, GOV.UK, the Scottish Government and the Student Loans Company. We link the source rather than paraphrasing a secondary summary.
Assumptions are published
Each calculator states what it assumes — the tax code basis, whether pension relief is applied before tax, how rounding is handled — so a result can be checked rather than trusted blindly.
Reviewed every tax year
Rates are reviewed at each Budget and at the start of each tax year. The rules behind 2025/26 were last reviewed 22 August 2026, and previous years stay available for comparison.
Plain English, no advice
Guides explain how a rule works and what usually happens. They never tell you what to do with your money, and they never imply a personalised recommendation.
Commercial separation
Advertising and affiliate partnerships have no influence on a calculation, a guide's conclusion, or the order in which anything appears. Editorial decisions are made before commercial ones.
Corrections
If a figure or explanation is wrong we fix it and note the change on the methodology page. Reports of errors are welcome through the contact page and are prioritised over new features.
